Motorola slashes 150 R&D jobs

Motorola is cutting 150 jobs from Motorola Labs, the firm's research and development arm. The division is being reorganized and some projects are being cut along with the employees. About 180 employees will be reassigned to other business divisions and the workers will report to the executives within those divisions.

The changes, which will take effect July 1, are part of the firm's cost-cutting measures. Motorola plans to save $500 million in 2008.  The company announced earlier in the year that it was going to cut 2,600 jobs. Most of those jobs were overseas and occurred when Motorola shut down its cell-phone manufacturing plant in Singapore.

The struggling tech firm has been trying to recover after a series of missteps. Motorola CEO Greg Brown has been recruiting a new executive to run the firm's mobile phone division. Despite rumors that the firm was nearing a decision on that post, no replacement has been named.
