New MVNO targets Chinese-Americans

Tools

A new MVNO targeting Chinese-Americans is offering low-cost international calls to Asia and a Razr phone with Chinese characters. Red Pocket Mobile apparently soft-launched about two weeks ago but is now embarking on a major marketing push in Chinese-language media. It looks like the service is only up and running in New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco. The MVNO says a phone call to China, Singapore or Taiwan costs exactly the same as a call within the U.S., and it offers some unique calling features such as iConnectHome, which allows friends, family or business contacts to dial a local number in Asia and reach a Red Pocket Mobile customer directly, without the need to dial a long-distance U.S. number. Interestingly, the company is named after the traditional red envelope in which the Chinese distribute money to friends and family during New Year celebrations.
