Nokia makes Lumia 928 official, stays mum on launch details

Nokia (NYSE:NOK) officially unmasked its next high-end Lumia Windows Phone device, the Lumia 928, which appears destined for Verizon Wireless (NYSE:VZ).

Nokia launched an official teaser site for the phone, and used an image of someone capturing a beach scene to tout the phone's imaging capabilities, with the tagline "capture the highlights." The site notes: "Stay tuned for updates about the newest Nokia Lumia." Nokia is holding an event in London May 14 based around Lumia, and may officially announce the phone there.

According to Engadget, Nokia offered more details in a similar advertisement in the magazine Vanity Fair, mentioning there that the phone will have its PureView imaging technology, which enhances picture quality, especially for low-light photography, as well as optical image stabilization technology and a Carl Zeiss lens. Nokia has lately been touting its imaging capabilities as one of its key differentiators.

A recent Bloomberg report, which cited unnamed sources, said Verizon will launch the device this month, and that the Lumia 928 has a metal body, 4.5-inch touchscreen display, 8-megapixel camera and wireless charging capabilities. Nokia CEO Stephen Elop has strongly hinted at the phone.

Representatives from Verizon and Nokia declined to comment.

Elop said that the company remains committed to using Microsoft's (NASDAQ:MSFT) Windows Phone operating system for its smartphones. In the first quarter, Nokia's Lumia shipments increased to a record 5.6 million, but its total mobile phone shipments (including low-end feature phones and high-end smartphones) fell to 61.9 million, down 25 percent from 82.7 million in the first quarter of 2012.

"We make adjustments as we go," Elop told reporters ahead of a shareholders' meeting, according to Reuters. "But it's very clear to us that in today's war of ecosystems, we've made a very clear decisions to focus on Windows Phone with our Lumia product line. And it is with that that we will compete with competitors like Samsung and Android."
