Nokia unveils Bluetooth rival
Nokia unveiled a new short-range wireless technology called Wibree that could work with or rival Bluetooth. Nokia claims the new tech requires a fraction of the power that other radio techs do, so it's ideal for small devices. Nokia suggests that Wibree could be integrated into mobile phones, PCs, small watches or wireless keyboards. Wibree has a 10-meter range and a data rate of 1 megabit per second. Nokia is working to create a final interop spec that it will make available through an open forum. The company says Wibree should launch commercially by Q2 of next year.

Nice to see you on the ball with your news reports, but how about spending a bit more time on the analysis. Unlike other low power wireless technologies, Wibree has the real advantage that it works within the framework of an established standard - Bluetooth. That makes it unique in that it's the only such short range wirless contender that comes with its own gateway technology allowing it to connect to other wireless services. Far from making it a rival, it should ensure that Bluetooth appears in an even larger proportion of mobile phones.
