Nokia's Elop faces a host of challenges

stephen elop nokiaNokia (NYSE:NOK) CEO Stephen Elop is not even a week into his job at the helm of the world's largest handset maker, but he already faces a host of problems equal in scale to his company's global market share. As the New York Times notes, Elop will have to try and crack a culture that some have criticized as being too complacent (though Nokia begs to differ on that characterization). And as industry analyst Keith Mallinson argues, Elop will have to decide whether Nokia needs to or should replicate Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) and Google's mobile business models. Additionally, Mallinson argues, Nokia will have to look beyond handsets for growth, and will have to focus  on carrier and end-user customers who fit best with what Nokia has to offer--which is still a lot.
