Nokia's Lumia 920 gets priced at $150, according to Best Buy

Nokia's (NYSE:NOK) flagship Lumia 920 Windows Phone 8 smartphone will cost $149.99 when paired with a two-year contract, according to a Best Buy website. That pricing would allow the Lumia 920 to undercut the prices of some of the other marquee smartphones it will be competing against in the fourth quarter.

The website, which was later amended to remove information about the Lumia 920, also said the device will cost $600 without a carrier contract. AT&T Mobility (NYSE:T) will exclusively launch the device for the U.S. market in November, but AT&T and Nokia have not said how much the gadget will cost. AT&T launched the Lumia 900 in April for $99.99 with a contract.

For Nokia, the launch of the Lumia 920 will be critical. Nokia reported shipping 2.9 million Lumia smartphones worldwide during its third quarter, down significantly from the 4 million the company shipped during the second quarter. In the North American market, Nokia reported shipping 300,000 devices, down from 600,000 in the first and second quarters of the year.

T-Mobile USA plans to be the exclusive provider of Nokia's Lumia 810, one of Nokia's two new Windows Phone 8 smartphones. The 810 appears to be a variant of the Lumia 820, which Nokia introduced last month. T-Mobile did not provide pricing but said the gadget will be available in the "coming weeks."

There are also rumors that Verizon Wireless (NYSE:VZ) will soon launch a variant of the Lumia 820. Generating carrier support in the United States will be critical to the success of Nokia's North American Lumia sales.

Interestingly, Best Buy's website still shows the HTC Windows Phone 8X for AT&T at $99.99 with a contract and $600 without a carrier contract. HTC, like Nokia, is trying to use Microsoft's (NASDAQ:MSFT) Windows Phone platform to revive its fortunes this holiday season.

Microsoft and HTC have said they will launch a joint marketing effort for HTC's 8X and 8S smartphones. Microsoft will hold a media event Oct. 29 where it is expected to formally unveil Windows Phone 8 to the market and announce several new software features. Microsoft is banking on wider carrier availability and marketing to help it gain more traction against Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iOS and Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android.

Representatives from Nokia and HTC declined to comment. If the Best Buy pricing details are to be believed, both the Lumia 920 and HTC 8X are priced below the iPhone 5 and Samsung Electronics' Galaxy S III, which cost $199.99 with a two-year contract for the cheapest models.
