Novatel Wireless is launching a line of devices that will let users create a wireless broadband hotspot using the 3G wireless network, effectively giving them a hotspot on the go.

The device, which Novatel calls "MiFi" is being billed as a smart hotspot that gives users access to the Internet using high-speed networks such as Sprint Nextel or Verizon Wireless' EV-DO networks or AT&T Mobility and T-Mobile USA's UMTS/HSDPA networks. The device, which is no bigger than a stack of playing cards, will get up to 40 hours of standby time and 4 hours of actual use without needing to be charged, according to Novatel. 

Novatel said it will sell its MiFi devices through the carriers and that the devices will be available in early 2009. And while the carriers will determine pricing, Novatel said it expects the devices to cost under $200 before any carrier subsidies.
