The fight over mobile technology patents that has accelerated this year is on a collision course with another facet of technology law: antitrust concerns. A central question now being debated among scholars and in the corridors of the Department of Justice is whether mobile companies are amassing and using patents to stifle competition. According to the Wall Street Journal, a range of companies, including Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL), Google (NASDAQ:GOOG), Microsoft  (NASDAQ:MSFT) and Samsung have been beating  path to the Justice Department's antitrust division to discuss patents. According to the report, which cited unnamed sources familiar with the matter, some companies are asking the government to act against what they describe as anticompetitive behavior by rivals while others are defending deals they made to get patents--and some are doing both.
