Police want tipsters to text in crimes
The popularity of text messaging among teens and 20-somethings is giving police a new outlet for anonymous tipsters. Instead of dialing CrimeStoppers, tipsters can text their information to police in about 100 cities nationwide. Tipsters can send the text, which is routed through a server and encrypted so that the tip is impossible to track. Boston police, who adopted the system last year, have received 678 text tips.
