Prepaid service growth outpaces contracts

Prepaid cell phone growth has outstripped contract-based service two to one in 2007 and into 2008, a new study has found.

The research, by Informa Telecoms & Media found that at the end of 2007 there were 2.33 billion prepaid subscribers worldwide, and that prepaid service produced $241.9 billion in revenue in 2007 for mobile operators, with the Asia Pacific market being the largest prepaid market. 

The report also found that at the end of the year about 28.9 percent of reported subscriptions worldwide will be from people who have second or third SIM cards.
