PwC: Mobile internet access market to grow to $122B by 2020, generating 300 trillion MB

The U.S. mobile internet access market will grow from $85 billion this year to $122 billion in 2020, according to PwC's new "Global Entertainment and Media Outlook 2016-2020" report.

"For content providers across the entertainment and media industry, the message is clear: seamless delivery and a focus on the consumer experience is the formula for growth in today's evolved E&M business landscape," said Deborah Bothun, PwC's Global and U.S. Entertainment & Media Leader, in a release. "With a clearer picture of what's ahead, savvy companies will be best positioned to embrace change and choose a path that allows them to look ahead with confidence."

The report also noted that the total amount of data consumed over wireless devices in the U.S. will fall just short of 300 trillion MB (273 EB) by 2020. "Thus the US will continue to be the largest market in the world by some distance in terms of data traffic, with China the only other market to exceed 100trn MB by 2020," the report said.

Further, the report said that, by 2020, smartphones will account for 28.3 percent of all data traffic in the United States, behind tablets at 23.5 percent.
