Qualcomm's general counsel resigns

Tools

Qualcomm's Lou Lupin has resigned his position as EVP and general counsel following a series of patent litigation setbacks for the company and a recent "benchslap" from a federal judge regarding some of Qualcomm's lawyers' conduct. The company has appointed Carol Lam, a SVP and legal counsel with the company, as acting general counsel, while the company searches for a permanent replacement for Lupin.

Qualcomm CEO Paul Jacobs noted that Lupin "has played a major role in the formation of Qualcomm's successful technology licensing program and negotiation of key licensing agreements."

A federal judge also just upped the amount in damages Qualcomm must pay Broadcom to $39.3 million. The judge cited the intentional nature of Qualcomm's patent infringement as a basis for the increase.
