RAZR drives Motorola's sales

Motorola said its earnings soared 86 percent in the fourth quarter, driven primarily by the popularity of the RAZR phone. Mobile devices accounted for about 58 percent of the vendor's total revenue for 2005, up from 55 percent the year before. Motorola said it shipped 44.7 million handsets in the fourth quarter compared with 31.8 million in the last quarter of 2004, and 146 million for the year, a 40 percent increase from the year earlier. Motorola's flagship RAZR handset shipped 13 million units in the quarter, doubling its volumes for the third quarter in a row. But Motorola's fourth-quarter announcement resulted in a sell off on Wall Street. Handset operating margins remained flat on a sequential basis at 11 percent as investors had heightened expectations for the the fourth quarter.
