Report: Apple to unveil next iPhone Oct. 4

Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) will take the wraps off its next iPhone model at an event on Oct. 4, according to a report on AllThingsD.

The report, which cited unnamed sources, said that newly minted Apple CEO Tim Cook will preside over the event to unveil the iPhone 5. The event will mark the first iPhone unveiling not directed by Steve Jobs, who resigned as Apple CEO in August. The report did note, however, that Cook will likely be aided by a cadre of Apple lieutenants, including marketing chief Phil Schiller, iOS software head Scott Forstall and Eddy Cue, who was recently named senior vice president of Internet software and services.

An Apple spokeswoman declined to comment.

The October launch date fits with recent reports about the iPhone, especially with reports that Sprint Nextel (NYSE:S) will get the device starting next month. Sprint also will hold an investor conference in New York Oct. 7, though that meeting is likely to be dominated by news about Sprint's 4G strategy.

Reports have indicated for months that the new iPhone will have a faster--and perhaps dual-core--processor, and will have its 5-megapixel camera bumped up to an 8-megapixel camera. There have also been conflicting reports over how much the new iPhone will be a redesign from the iPhone 4, which suffered from antenna issues shortly after its launch last year. Some reports have also indicated Apple will announce a cheaper version of the iPhone 4 with 8 GB of memory. Apple sold 20.3 million iPhones in its last quarter and became the world's largest smartphone maker, surpassing Nokia (NYSE:NOK) in smartphone volumes for the first time.
