Report: Going green equates to savings...eventually

A new ABI Research report says that operators can expect some compelling cost savings for making cellular base stations more power efficient. But it may take a few years before those savings start to kick in. Over the next few years the cost of bulk diesel fuel, coupled with wholesale electricity price increases, will likely offset gains in cellular base station power efficiency.

Operators should collectively spend about $22 billion in 2013 in operating expenses, says ABI. However, by 2012, the benefits of more efficient base stations and energy efficient initiatives should start to rein in the spiraling operating expenditures. Infrastructure vendors, meanwhile, are focusing on more energy efficient products. ABI says that these product advancements should reduce the average base station power consumption level by 43 percent between 2007 and 2013.
