Report: LG surpasses Motorola for third place in 2008

Tools

LG Electronics edged out Motorola as the third biggest handset maker in 2008 in terms of the number of units shipped, according to a report in DigiTimes.

The report said LG shipped 100 million units in 2008, barely beating out Motorola's 99.9 million shipments worldwide. Sony Ericsson was in fifth place with 96.6 million units shipped. Nokia retained its post as the world's largest handset maker, shipping 470 million units, and Samsung was in second, shipping 200 million units, according to the figures.

If the numbers hold after all of the handset makers report their full-year figures, it would confirm Motorola's decline. The company has faced weakening financial prospects and sales, and its market share position remains uncertain. In the third quarter, Samsung passed Motorola as the third biggest handset maker in the United States.

Motorola, once the world’s wireless powerhouse,

Now, is just another Chicago slaughterhouse,

A butcher’s paradise,

Slice, slice, slice,

Saw, saw, saw,

Slit, slit, slit,

Cut, cut, cut,

Grind, grind, grind,

Into oblivion.

YAWN!!! I DOUBT THAT SERIOUSLY. MOTOROLA IS THE KING OF INNOVATION. THEY MAKE OTHER TECHNOLOGICAL PRODUCTS TOO. LOOK AROUND YOUR HOME OR OFFICE AND YOU MIGHT FIND SOMETHING WITH MOTOROLA EMBOSSED ON IT...BESIDES ON A CELL PHONE. FUNNY EVERY TIME I LOOK AT A HOLLYWOOD MOVIE THE MOST HELD CELL PHONE IS? YOU GUESSED IT...........

Yawner. You must be looking at 1942's movie with Humphrey Bogart. From 40 million phones a quarter to 19 million and falling. Every quarter, MOT kicks out thousands of employees. Every quarter, MOT shrinks. At its current shrinkage rate, Motorola Devices will be gone in 6 quarters, and Mr. Jha will collect his $30 million bonus when all is said and done. Networks is crumbling. Who cares about cable modems? Yawners are why Motorola has been a sleep for a long time.

You are probably from the 1940's. Selling cell phones is not going to make MOTOROLA go out of business. I know one thing about the doubters is that they are always hoping for companies that HELP build this country - infrastructure and telecommunications wise to go under. I don't understand the naysayers. Why should MOTOROLA go under? Why on earth are they building WIMAX in India? (I could be wrong with the exact country)Many countries outside of the United States have sought MOTOROLA'S help and expertise with broadband, telecommunications and other projects essential to the goals of their respective countries. It has also won contracts. When Motorola is gone who is going to take it's place as THE KING OF INNOVATION after MICROSOFT? I know it definately will not be APPLE. I can say thank you for all the technologies you have created for America past, present and into the future. We want our companies to prosper not falter. Guys - I am not trying to give them free press but go on their website - You will see all the technologies MOTOROLA is investing or involved in. You wish that cable modems is all they make. Maybe that is the only thing in your home. They are just as much a part of America than any of those companies that you want to go under. KEEP ROCKING MOTOROLA...AMERICA HAS YOUR BACK!!!
