Report: RIM is top-seller in June

Research in Motion scored big in June. According to Avian Securities' monthly U.S. handset survey that tracks the top-selling handsets at each of the four major wireless carriers, once again RIM was the No. 1 seller in June, followed by LG and Samsung.

Avian Securities analyst Matt Thornton said that Samsung did well in June because of Sprint's launch of the Instinct. Nokia also gained some share thanks to the release of the 5310 by T-Mobile.  As expected, anecdotal information from AT&T stores indicates that there is lots of demand for the 3G iPhone.

Last week RIM reported a fiscal first-quarter profit that was lower than anticipated and offered a lower than expected outlook. Nevertheless, UBS Securities analyst Maynard Um speculates that RIM is investing more so it can become a major handset player. Um says that the company's "purchase obligations and commitments" is up 53 percent from the prior quarter, which he believes indicates "a large upcoming ramp up in units" at RIM.
