RIM: Home media servers and prepaid for BB

Research In Motion made two big announcements this week at Mobile World Congress: It would start offering home media servers for its BlackBerry users and it would be launching a prepaid billing option for the handset users. The home media service, called "Unite Servers," is very similar to a fixed-mobile convergence service, except it uses an existing computer in the home to sync the device up to its email--instead of communicating over the carrier's data network.

Alcatel Lucent is powering a new prepaid option for BlackBerry users. The plan keeps track of the amount of data sent by the user and charges accordingly.
