RIM to pay Nokia royalties for patents

Research In Motion signed a new deal with Nokia to pay the Finnish handset giant up front for royalties in exchange for use of its wireless patents.

The world's largest handset maker did not disclose the financial details of the deal with the Canadian BlackBerry maker, but did say that RIM had signed a new multi-year patent license agreement with them, which covers CDMA2000, WCDMA and GSM patents.

Ilkka Rahnasto, Nokia's vice president of intellectual property rights, said that the deal shows the success of Nokia's increased attention to patent out-licensing. Earlier this year, Nokia agreed to make a one-time $2.2 billion payment to Qualcomm, as the two entered into a 15-year patent agreement that ended a long legal battle between the two.
