RIM posts higher revenue, adds 2.6M new BlackBerry accounts

Tools

Research In Motion posted higher revenue for its fiscal third quarter, but its net earnings were down compared to the second quarter and it added fewer BlackBerry accounts in the quarter than it had previously forecast.

The Canadian company had revenues of $2.78 billion for the fiscal third quarter for 2009, which ended Nov. 28, up from 7.9 percent from the $2.58 billion it had in the second quarter and up 66.3 percent from the $1.67 billion in the third quarter last year.

However, some of its financial results were not as rosy. The BlackBerry maker's net income for the quarter was $396.3 million, down 20 percent from $495.5 million in the second quarter. RIM had net income of $370.5 million in the third quarter last year. The company also added around 2.6 million new BlackBerry subscriber accounts in the quarter, and the total subscriber base increased 14 percent from the second quarter to 21 million. The 2.6 million new subscriber adds was down from 2.9 million that RIM had previously forecast.
