Rumor Mill: Intel investing $2B in Sprint/Clearwire

Tools

Rumors are circulating once again that Sprint Nextel will spin off its Xohm WiMAX broadband unit and form a joint venture with Clearwire. The Street.com is reporting that the deal between the two firms will include a $2 billion investment from Intel Capital.

If this rumored deal actually goes through, it will give a much-needed vote of confidence to WiMAX. Many companies at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona said much of WiMAX's future was resting on Sprint's Xohm business. Without Xohm, mobile WiMAX may not be anything other than a niche play.

Find out the latest on Xohm at the FierceWireless co-located event "4G and Beyond" on April 2 at CTIA Wireless 2008. Barry West, CTO of Sprint and head of the Xohm unit will be a keynote speaker and will provide a status update on Xohm. Here's a link to the agenda.

how ? the market by mid year will have wimax mpci cards and licensing options becuase carriers needs gear and resellers point blank. if you think you can bypass then, then I feel your wrong. We will release our own FREE MOBILE MESH WIMAX code by years end using mutliple frequencies and modulations, from development centers across the world, and coders across the planet. The rush is one , yes, but dont be as supprised to see the bigger guys are spending more time visiting our neck of the woods as we speak versus doing thier own development. had the us folled several standard recomendations , they would not be as low on the pole on the internet. Will this happen in the wimax? Sure! Wimax can already be completed ( been up and running for 5 years) no line of sight concrete bunker to bunker, 5 megabits for 5 megabytes. This is not near the needed speed but was an old wimax veriation using 5 GHZ unlicensed bands and modulation.

How can Wimax compete with cable and FREE WiFi?
Most airports, hotels and coffee shops offer free wifi. And do you think I am dropping my DSL or cable for Wireless Broadband? Not a chance...

Most airports, hotels and coffee shops will be using Wimax and/or LTE! So they do have to deal with WiFi anymore... The question is more about the race with LTE and Wimax?

While the big guys on the top are juggling with billions, the small businesses in the bottom can't wait anymore! Who was talking about trickle down from the top?

Google: May 7, 2008 ... The new company will combine Clearwire's existing consumer WiMAX ... to our $500 million contribution as part of the investment group, ...
Intel: Clearwire announced their partnership in July 2007, ... While it's not exactly chump change, a $2 billion investment by Intel ...
Comcast: would invest as much as $1 billion in the venture, with Time Warner ... Clearwire, Sprint Up; Comcast Off On Possible WiMax Deal.
Time Warner Cable: May 7, 2008 ... will invest $550 million, ...
Sprint: May 7, 2008 ... based Sprint Nextel's (NYSE:S) investment is valued at $7.4 billion; the investment by Clearwire (NASDAQ: CLWR), based in Kirkland, Wash., ...

Otherwise ATT won't have to be worried about any of the companies mentioned above! except maybe Google....

Any money put towards Sprint, is money thrown down a rat hole.
