Rumor Mill: Lenovo preparing for a bid to acquire BlackBerry

Chinese computer maker Lenovo is reportedly preparing a bid for Canada's BlackBerry (NASDAQ:BBRY) that could be made as early as this week, according to a Benzinga.com article that quotes an unnamed source. The news helped drive a spike in BlackBerry's stock price.

This isn't the first time that Lenovo has reportedly set its sights on BlackBerry. However, the Canadian government has voiced some concerns over selling BlackBerry to a foreign company due to BlackBerry's extensive secure messaging technologies. Governments entities in Canada, the United States and elsewhere use BlackBerry services and devices--President Obama has long been a BlackBerry user.

Lenovo, for its part, has built a successful business around international acquisitions. The company took over IBM's ThinkPad-branded laptop business, and is currently in the process of acquiring Google's Motorola-branded smartphone business. The addition of BlackBerry's enterprise technologies, patents and smartphone expertise could add to Lenovo's mobile play.

Lenovo and BlackBerry declined to comment on this latest round of speculation, according to Reuters. Article
