Rumor Mill: RIM to get out of NTP settlement?

Tools

According to a new set of rumors, Research in Motion (RIM) may be able avoid its settlement with patent holding company NTP. The two companies settled their long-standing suit earlier this year, with RIM agreeing to pay NTP $450 million to end the legal dispute. After the settlement, though, issues surrounding NTP's patent came to the surface, with many insiders claiming that NTP's patent claims were not as sound as the company had claimed. RIM is now working on a technology that they claim will let BlackBerry handhelds operate without infringing on NTP's patents.
