Samsung Electronics revealed that it has sold 10 million units of its new flagship Galaxy S III Android smartphone since it first went on sale less than two months ago.

J.K. Shin, president of Samsung's mobile division, made the announcement Sunday, according to a Yonhap News report from South Korea. The Samsung executive did not give a precise sales figure or say whether the sale figure meant sales into the retail channel or sales to direct end users. The device went on sale May 29.

Still, the sales total is a remarkable testament to Samsung's growing dominance in the market. The company became the largest handset maker and smartphone vendor by volume in the first quarter and will likely keep those titles for the second quarter.

The Galaxy S III is the fastest Samsung device to hit the 10 million sales mark. The Galaxy S II reached the mark in five months and the original Galaxy S hit 10 million unit sales in seven months. The newest version is being sold in the United States by Verizon Wireless (NYSE:VZ), AT&T Mobility (NYSE:T) Sprint Nextel (NYSE:S), T-Mobile USA and U.S. Cellular. C Spire Wireless also plans to launch the device.

The U.S. version of the device runs version 4.0, or Ice Cream Sandwich, of Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android platform, and sports a dual-core Qualcomm (NASDAQ:QCOM) Sanpdragon processor. The gadget also features a 4.8-inch Super AMOLED display at 720p resolution, 8-megapixel back camera and 1.9-megapixel front-facing camera with burst and best-shot capabilities (similar to the HTC One series), 16 or 32 GB of storage, Bluetooth 4.0 support, 802.11n Wi-Fi, NFC, and a 2,100mAh battery.

The device has several unique features, including the ability to detect a user's face, voice and motions. The device can recognize how someone is using the phone by having the camera detect a user's eyes. Additionally, the device follows voice commands, similar to Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) Siri.
