Software update blamed for RIM outage

A software upgrade at Research in Motion's data center is being blamed for last week's outage that left millions of BlackBerry users without their email last Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning.

According to RIM Co-CEO Jim Balsillie, the update was supposed to improve temporary storage space in the email system. Balsillie called the risk of another similar failure "quite avoidable." But Balsillie's explanation isn't sitting well with operators that sell RIM devices and analysts that follow the company. Some question whether the company is having difficulty keeping up with its growth.

Meanwhile RIM is forging ahead--the firm last Friday announced that T-Mobile USA will soon be offering the BlackBerry 8800.
