Sony Ericsson has inked manufacturing agreements with Flextronics and Foxconn to make mobile phones in India. The initial focus of the agreements is to make basic color phones and mid-level music-enabled phones with some customized features like local content for the Indian market. The handset maker plans to manufacture 10 million phones in India every year by 2009. Currently, SE makes about one third of its phones in China, while the remainder are manufactured in Brazil, Japan and Malaysia. While the investment sum was undisclosed, Sony Ericsson plans to set up shop in the sourthern city of Chennai.
