SPOTLIGHT: Kargo announces U.S. Web site for mobile content

The direct-to-consumer market for mobile content is heating up as mobile content distributor Kargo announced what it calls the largest U.S. Web site for mobile content, FeverMobile.com. Designed as a direct-to-consumer site for downloading content to the handset, FeverMobile.com plans to offer users the ability to purchase either separate pieces of content or a subscription plan. Kargo says the site will initially launch on Cingular Wireless and T-Mobile this quarter with other nationwide carriers to follow. It will be interesting to see if Verizon Wireless signs on. Sprint Nextel is also open to allowing subscribers to receive content from third-party providers, leaving Verizon as one of the few Tier 1 operators in the U.S. with a comparatively closed content strategy. But as Verizon's data services usage continues to surge every quarter, Verizon has little impetus to change its relationship with content providers at this point. Release
