Sprint adds more data options for DirecTV customers who switch - but they're not free

Sprint (NYSE: S) is upping the ante for DirecTV customers who want to switch over to Sprint by offering them plans with larger data buckets, though the new plans are not free of charge like the earlier offer (which still stands). Last week Sprint said that through Sept. 30, both DirecTV customers switching to Sprint and existing Sprint customers who add a new line of service through the Sprint Lease, Sprint's "iPhone Forever" plan, Sprint Easy Pay or who pay full retail price for a smartphone will get 12 months of unlimited voice texting and a 2 GB of data per line (for up to five lines).

That offer still is valid but now Sprint is adding plans to the offer that dole out 4 GB of data per line for $10 per month, or 6 GB of data per line for $20 per month. Customers are also responsible for a $36 activation charge and monthly taxes and fees. AT&T (NYSE: T), which owns DirecTV, has dismissed Sprint's offers as "a desperate Hail Mary pass to a petite defensive lineman." Release
