Sprint may close call centers to cut costs

Sprint Nextel, as it looks to cut costs, said calls to its call centers could decline 20 percent next year and the company might halve the number of call centers it has, according to Sprint's Chief Service Officer Bob Johnson.

Johnson said the company will be closing the call centers because wireless service is improving, but it could also be because its subscriber base is declining. In the third quarter Sprint lost 1.3 million subscribers and its base declined to 50.5 million, which was the lowest the company had reported since the first quarter of 2006.

Analysts have speculated recently about whether the company will cut jobs in the first part of 2009 and how large the job cuts will be. Walter Piecyk, an analyst at Pali Research, recently said he expected there to be "significant" job cuts at Sprint in January. CFO Bob Brust recently said "everything's on the table" as Sprint looks to cut costs and pay down its debt.

Sprint's voluntary separation package for some of its employees, which it offered in mid-November, expired a week ago. Sprint CEO Dan Hesse has not commented on any possible job cuts, preferring to wait until the company's fourth quarter results are finalized before making any decisions.

As a Sprint employee I hate to see anyone lose there job but the fact is we have so many overlay positions that just aren't needed. Customer Care has improved dramatically over the last 6-8 months and calls to Care have decreased and yes so has our base, primarily on the iDEN side of the house. So if we can save cash by "cutting the fat" then let's do it. Sprint is a great company with tons to offer our customers, especially those wanting data centric solutions. But we have to be do more to compete with Verizon and AT&T due to their superior marketing and Iconic devices like the Iphone and Storm.

Sprint has closed 10 call centers this year already and there are plans for at least one more in February.

THE TULSA CALL CENTER FOR SPRINT THAT IS OPERATED BY ALORICA HAS BEEN SENDING EVERY ONE HOME ON EARLY RELEASE FOR THE PAST WEEK. SHOW UP AND 30 MINUTES LATER YOUR TOLD TO GO HOME NO WORK TODAY. NO CALL COMING IN FROM SPRINT CUSTOMERS. AT LEAST THIS IS WHAT WE ARE TOLD.

My roommate and I were fired from the Tulsa Sprint call center recently. They're looking for any reason to get rid of people with great stats. My advice is not to get sick because doctor's notes and documented hospital stays are no longer a valid reason for missing work.

The Fairborn Ohio call center operated by Teleperformance was given notice on December 11th that we are closing as of Feb 28th. Calls are steady and only seem to slow down after 10pm or so. Then it's anywhere from 5 to 10 mins inbetween calls. But prior to 10pm there may only be 2 mins inbetween calls.

The Alorica Call Center in Topeka, Kansas for Sprint has sent home employees on "Early Release" since the first week of November, 2008. Employees are given verbal and written warnings every day - excellent employees. Alorica and Sprint are pushing employees to quit or be fired so they will not have to pay Unemployment Wages after the Christmas Holidays. Alorica - Topeka is rumored to close down after the New Year. They are negotiating a small contract with another company -- small chance of success.

Alorica in Topeka, KS: Management is promoting favorite employees. Management and their favored subjects show up when Sprint Execs are at the site. Excellent employees are fired or forced out for no valid reason.

Topeka, KS: 1 out of every 3 calls is a Cancellation call from customers going over to Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile .....

You guys need to grow up. We don't know if any of this is true. How can you put such garbage out their for the general public to make an opinion. You act as if every thing is great at the other carriers. Why on earth is AT&T eliminating 12,000 positions. They must be having a difficult time paying Steve Jobs for all those Iphone subsidies. Why did Verizon borrow the billions it needed to puchase Alltel? Maybe 67 or 71 million suscribers is not enough for them to generate revenue. Let's see what happens when they reach 100 or 150 million suscribers. We will see what they will be crying about next.. I guess its who you believe, the time of day or season. 100 billion dollars in revenue a year is not enough for Verizon and AT&T. Do you know how much is enough for them? Stifling competition is not important to you but it is to the smaller telecommunications companies. It's a whole new ball game when the Obama administration comes in. We can't afford to give them what they want at the expense of the little guy. Look at the mess we are in now because of people looking the other way - while wall street was spending our money and having lavish parties and disguised seminars. Now - they are wondering why Americans are holding on to their savings. These guys want us to spend and invest more in the stock market so they can continue with the celebrations and charades thats been going on Wall Street for years. They want to get rewarded for putting our country in the gutter. Hurray to Elliot Spitzer for reigning down on this Okidoke Corral down on Madison Ave. He truly was the,"sheriff of Wall Street". The new administration needs to create a cabinet post just for the financial sector - cause God knows we need one. The party on Wall Street will finally be over when this happens...........

Early Release (ER) for Topeka, KS call center all this week. Five to ten employees fired each day for calling in sick, not meeting metrics, personal politics of not being liked by management/supervisors. People fired for high percentage of transferred calls to Cancellation Dept. People fired for transferring calls to Tech Support due to frozen screens on Instinct phones, numerous network issues.

Sprint Alorica Call Center in Topeka is a ghetto.

I recently applied for employment at Sprints Corporate ca;; center in Charlotte NC and they really had my hopes high! I passed both interviews, they sent me to take the drug test and then they didn't hire me.(I was never guaranteed a postion after the second interview but I was determined I was gonna be hired and deliver superior customer service) Sprint is the only company I have ever applied to and was given a drug test(had to drive sevral miles out of my way to Matthews same day right after second interview) to take and they decided not to hire me!!! Has this happened to anyone else. I had to call back several times as well to get an update on the status of the hiring process then they send me an automated email saying they found someone more qualified for the positon, which I totally understand, but why spend the money sending me for a drug test and then refusing to hire me??? I did pass the drug test and all my interviews by the way, and I have to say after reading all these comments I can't feel sorry for myself for not getting the job offer. Then I see them hiring once again for the same positon they declined me for. Maybe I'm more than qualified and they think I will see right htrough their inconsistencies i have been reading about online. I was just really angry I put off pursuing other opportunities cause they had my hopes really high!!!! Any thoughts anyone, does this happen regularly???

Open your eyes buddy SPrint is going down hill they lead ppl on and refuse to deliver. MORE CALLS COME IN IN A DAY FOR PPL CANCELLING and they are always hiring people always. Look at the call centers all over the country especially the one in Charlotte they are always hiring and that is bad also they waste money when they ask potential employees to take drug tests and then decide not to hire them. What a waste. Quit living in denial Sprint stinks ever since merger with Nextel and we all know it!!!

i can tell you that att and verizon are not better than sprint, in recent polls it shows sprint is the most reliable when it comes to networks, our customer service and quality is ranked #1 and att and verizon and tmobile are shocked at the sudden turn around. frankly i am not , sprint has always been the best out there of any wireless company and is very lucky to have dan hess to make it even better. i am a sprint customer and i have yet to have bad service from sprint. not to metion the quality of my device is fantastic. so no matter what trash is spewed here sprint is the best and got the survey's and testing to prove it. i am also one of those effected by the reductions sprint is conducting, although i am sad to loose sprint i look forward to future with different client. sprint is doing this based solely off of business decisions that are necessary to the survial of the company . i believe this will actually increase overall performance and customer service for sprint and might even lead to better network improvements as well as devices. so do i hate sprint absolutely not....i appreciate them for giving me the opportunity to succeed for 7 years, i have seen the turnaround and very proud of it. keep it on rockin team sprint!!!!

fairborn Is closing because the center manager cant keep her nose clean or her legs shut,a pot head and a beast are second in command and the sups are high.

Charlotte, NC; Topeka, KS; and Lake County, FL call centers for Sprint are scheduled for shut-down within the next few months of 2009. These locations have been sending home agents on "Early Release" every day. You log in, then are told to go home. Tulsa, OK is closing.

Well I am relieved that Charlotte center didn't hire me then, cause if they are closing, aren't going to allow you to work an entire shift and make the money you need to support your family, then it's a complete waste. I was just ticked that Sprint made me waste my time taking a drug test and the 2 interviews and then not properly updating me. I said to my wife somethings not right and if this is how they do things then what kind of future would an employee have at Sprint and how are they gonna survive. What Sprint soesn't realize is organization is the key to success!

Topeka, KS and Charlotte, NC got some of Fairborn, OH's staff. Sprint is closing business with all of these centers within the next few months of 2009.

Sprint ought to be ashamed of themselves for constantly continuing to interview when they know they are about to close the call centers in Topeka, KS, and Charlotte. A numebr of people took drug tests and were declined the job so you are not alone. They are misleading people cause they want to look like they still have it al together even though since the merge with Nextel they have fallen apart in customer care. SPrint's customer care is probably the worst in the nation as some agents do not know ho to even help a customer activate their new phones etc. It's just a mess and if the ceo doesn't get a move on it it's gonna catch up with them.

Sprint is da bomb. I don't even pay my phone bill ontime. They give me almost a whole month to pay it.

I hate to see anyone lose their job also, but I disagree with your assessment. Sprint is closing the call centers to cut costs. They're cutting costs because they're losing customers. They're losing customers because their customer service is absolutely lousy.
Quit thinking the almighty dollar is the center of the universe. The almighty customer is the center of your universe right now and if you destroy your customer base, you destroy your company.

And I can prove it...ask any Sprint customer what they think of customer service.

Sprint call centers (corporate and outsourced U.S.) will layoff/shutdown more than the estimated number for 2009. Customers switching to AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile.

Get Real. If any body thinks that the other carriers are better at customer services then you are kidding yourself. Before sprint brought nextel, nextel customers service was the best. i used to work at mci call center as escalations rep (manager team, wink wink) and spoke with few customer service rep with the fcc. and according to their information: sprint and mci had the most complaints from customers, 2nd most complaint was slamming and the 1st is rep lied about products and services. person who has been around customer services for 20+years knows most of the time its not the company that is lying to the customer or misleading customers, its the people working for the telocommunications companyies. we are living in a new age now. its all about corporate greed the more this companies buy out their competitions then they set up a monoply forcing you to leave one company thinking you that you are getting a better off with out them, then you realize that the other company is still the same. poor customer service:(transfering to the wrong dept, not handling customer issues, customer doesn't know how to speak to the customer with a sincere heart and profession tone.), bad service area, customer rep doesn't have enough knowledge on their customers products and services. 10/10 is our fault (customer sev rep) because this companies do provide paid training and mgrs,current cust rep, sups to assist any cust rep in training if they need help. at mci i had the best on the job training for a company that i had ever had. right now we are in a serious reseccion and every where you turn their are layoffs including verizon, at't, sprint, t-mobile. some are due to cut costs and some are not explainable. we the people are ones that go to work for this companies and influence customers to leave.

I'd like an HONEST, DIRECT opinion about applying to the Sprint call center in Charlotte, NC..is it worth it or would it be a complete waste of time due to a possible layoff? I'd be relocating in order to take the job so this is VERY important to me. Anyone able to give a reliable answer?

Maybe if they stopped hiring people with a 1st grade education they would be adding customers not losing them.

As far as an honest and direct opinion about Sprint in Charlotte, NC - someone I know left a house (that was owned) in Rochester, NY, packed up the whole family and took off to work there (renting a house in Charlotte)a year and a half ago - now look at what's going on with Sprint and the unemployment rate in NC. By comparing the facts, December 2008 unemployment in NC was 8.7% (not trying to toot my own horn because I live in Rochester, NY but...) the unemployment rate in NY for December 2008 was 7.0%. Forbes just listed Charlotte, NC earlier this week as #15 for emptiest cities in the nation, and if you look at other reports, as Charlotte (AKA "Wall Street South" due to all of the banking there) is losing jobs constantly with all of the bank problems - While I'm not trying to tell someone what to do or where to live, I am just trying to state what has been reported about the city. To be honest, the entire world is feeling the effects of a slow economy so no place is perfect - I'd just do some homework before making any life changing decisions. As to the comments that every carrier is downsizing - Verizon is actually EXPANDING in Rochester adding 125 jobs to their call center in the town of Henrietta - so the news is not all bad. (If you can't handle a ton of snow and cold weather for about half the year though, I wouldn't suggest it out here, but if you can, Verizon might be an option) Good luck in whatever you decide.

Sprint will not renew contract with Charlotte, NC; Topeka, KS, many other corporate and U.S. vendors for 2009 and 2010.

Anybody know what the test question are about on the sprint assement for the positon at thier call center the first assement you take before hire? for customer service

If you were fired, it was for a valid reason as all terminations must be "proven" now that the managers in the Tulsa center must provide documentation that the agent has been coached, corrected and supported. If at that point, the agent has not shown improvement, only then can the agent be terminated.

well i was from the fairborn call center... I can tell you Sprint is going down hill. We were closed down and later three other sites within a month was closed down. Working for sprint is like working for the devil. WATCH OUT THEY WILL CLOSE YOU DOWN AS WELL.

I am currently employed by a call centre that services Sprint. In my opinion, Sprint has far to many scripted openings, responses and closings. We as agents cannot respond on a personal basis to our customers. They tell us to "own the call" but they make it impossible to do so. The call centre I work in is closing July 31st. The only calls that Sprint "fields" to us are billing calls (ie Care) those don't even count towards our minimum 20 calls per day because we have certain skill sets and "care" is not one of them. Sprint plays dirty and I will never work for an American call center again - 1/2 the story . . . so much more

As far as I'm concerned, they did themselves in by doing away with the free incoming plans and the Boost "Everthing" Plan - even though that plan does not include roaming. Also, too much gap in anytime minutes - plans go from 1500 to 3000 on most of their new plans and on any shared plan, customers pay for direct connect. Not so on an individual plan; direct connect is included. I get so many calls every day from customers looking for a "better" or "more economical" plan and in most cases I cannot help them becuase of these gaps. Sprint needs to wake up and smell the coffee.

Sprint customers . . . did you know that if you are contacted regarding a recent call, even if the agent you spoke with "resolved all of your issues", was polite, empathetic, and was downright amazing, if you say during the interview that you still do not "love" Sprint,the agent is penalized? Sorry Mr. Hesse, we as agents cannot do damage control.

Every time agents get a bad survey even though they wowed the customer on their call their head is on the chopping block, that is what happens when somebody tries to screw the rep who is doing a good job and is supposed to be the one to stay. Alrighty then lets add-up to the unemployment rate!!! Way to go for a longer recession!!!

THE CUSTOMERS SAID THE REP PROVIDED EXCELLENT CUSTOMER SERVICE AND LEAVE UP TO THE MORONS MANAGEMENT TEAM, MANAGEMENT WOULD SAY "NO YOU WERE RUDE TO THE CUSTOMERS".THE NEW HIRES WERE THE RUDE ONES AND NEVER LOST THEIR JOBS. BUT ALMOST ALL REPS THATS BEEN THERE FOR 5 YEARS & UP WERE TERMINATED. ALSO, SPRINT WILL PAY A 3RD PARTY TO FIND OUT INFO ABOUT THEIR SYSTEM AND PRODUCTS. US REPS WERE THE KEY TO EVERYTHING. THAT EXTRA MONEY THEY PAID OUT COULD HAVE BEEN TOWARDS OUR RAISES WE DIDN'T GET GOING ON 3 YEARS. BUT THEY HAD MONEY FOR CRUISES AND TRIPS. LET’S BE REAL ABOUT IT AND STOP FAKING AND SHAKING.

SPRINT CALLCENTER IN OKLAHOMA CITY IS LIKE AIG, EXCEPT WE DIDN'T GET RAISES. I RATHER HAVE DEALT WITH ONE OF PREVIOUS CALL CENTER DIRECTOR, INSTEAD OF CRAIG SHERRY, WHOM I CALL "THE DEVIL" AND EVERYBODY KNOWS HE IS "THE DEVIL". HE DESTROYED OUR CALL CENTER WORSE THAT WHAT IT WAS. SPRINT OKC IS A DIVIDED CALL CENTER.

WHY SHOULD WE HAVE TO FIND ANOTHER JOB? I'M TAKING A STAND BECAUSE OF THESE LAWS GIVING TO MUCH POWER TO CORPORATE AMERICA AND I DON'T WANT OUR CHILDREN GROWING UP FEELING THE PAIN AND NOT BEING ACCEPTED BY THE CORPORATE WORLD BECAUSE THEY DON'T LIKE YOU.

SOME OF US GOT FIRED FOR DOING OUR JOBS AND SOME OF US GOT FIRED BECAUSE THEY DON'T LIKE US AND ALL TOGETHER SPRINT OKC FABRICATED A LIE TO FIRE ALL OF US, BY CREATING A HOSTILE AND STRESSFUL ENVIRONMENT.WE HAVE HEARD STORIES ABOUT OTHER CALL CENTER GET MORE LENIENCY THAN US. EVEN OTHER PEOPLE THAT VISITED THE OKC CALL CENTER SAID THIS PLACE CRAZY AND HOW COULD WE ALL PUT UP WITH. WE FEAR NO MORE.

PEOPLE WOULD STAND OUTSIDE SPRINT OKLAHOMA CALL CENTER AND PRAY BEFORE THEY WENT IN THE BULIDING. MY LONG TIME FRIEND DIED BECAUSE SHE WAS STRESSED OUT AT SPRINT. SOMEBODY PLEASE CHECK THE AMBULANCE REPORT. THE AMBULANCE WAS THERE EVERYDAY AT ONE POINT. JUST ASK THE EMPLOYEES ABOUT THE CRAZINESS. SOMEBODY TELL THE TRUTH AND SHAME THE DEVIL.

I have a question..I have to go to sprint call center in charlotte to finish my application process and take some tests..I have 2 years of call center exp..are there any chances that I will get the job or no...?

I have been through the first interview and the voice test, I have a second interview Wednesday. I saw that another person was given the opportunity to take the drug test and was still not selected. Please advise if you think this will happen? I am currently unemployed and thinking of relocating if offered this position in Charlotte, but if it is not secure I do not want to lose out on another job opportunity that I have.

Shootings and severral police visits to the Alorica call center since it has been opened since July, 2007. They have gone through 6 site managers and 2 human resources managers in 2 years.
