Sprint retools family plans

Sprint is revamping its family plans to make them more cost-effective. The plans, which will debut June 15, include a voice-only option for families, called Talk Share, that offers 700 minutes for two phone lines for $69.99. The other, pricier plans targeted at families, bundle in unlimited messaging and data. For example, the company has a Talk/Message/Data Share plan for $129.99 for 1,500 minutes or 3,000 minutes for $169.99. The carrier says that these plans are less expensive than similar plans offered by competitors AT&T and Verizon Wireless. Plus Sprint is touting that its free night and weekend calling begins at 7 p.m., not 9 p.m., like the other operators.

For individuals, the company has a few new voice-only plans beginning at $39.99 for 450 minutes of airtime or $59.99 for 900 minutes.

Walter Piecyk, analyst with Pali Research, says that the new $169.99 family plan that offers 3,000 minutes and unlimited data and messaging represents a 19 percent price cut compared to Sprint's previous plans. However, he added that it's going to take more than these price cuts to return Sprint to positive subscribe growth.
