Sprint settles VoIP patent disputes

Sprint Nextel settled a patent infringement dispute with Paetec Holdings, bringing to a rest a suit that Sprint filed more than a year ago over VoIP patents.

The terms of the settlement between Sprint and the New York-based telecommunications company were not disclosed. Paetec said in a regulatory filing that it would license Sprint patents covering "certain of Paetec's activities." Paetec said the terms of the deal would not have a material impact in its financials.

In January 2008 Sprint filed suit against Paetec and three other companies for violating six of its VoIP patents. The suits came on the heels of Sprint's $80 million settlement with Vonage in 2007. Sprint also has settled similar claims against two other companies in the dispute, NuVox and Broadvox. One remaining claim, against Big River Telephone Co., is pending.
