Sprint's Boost Mobile cuts prices, doubles data on prepaid plans

Sprint's (NYSE: S) prepaid brand Boost Mobile is launching a new promotion in which it is cutting the price and doubling the data allotments of its plans. The new prices come after Sprint introduced new shared data family plans and cheaper individual unlimited data plans on its primary Sprint brand.

Starting Sept. 3 and running through Nov. 3, customers can get Boost's new "Data Boost Plans." The plans cost $5 less per month than existing Boost plans and provide twice as much data on any Boost Mobile handset. The new plans are available to new and existing customers. As with its existing plans, Boost noted that video streaming may be limited to 3G speeds

The new promotional plans are:

  • $35 per month for unlimited voice, texting and 1 GB of data before throttling
  • $45 per month for unlimited voice, texting and 5 GB of data before throttling
  • $55 per month for unlimited voice, texting and 10 GB of data before throttling

As long as a Boost customer signs up for the new plans between Sept. 3 and Nov. 3 and their account remains active, they will retain the discounted price plan with double the data. After Nov. 3, Boost's price plans will go back to $40, $50 and $60 with high-speed data before throttling of 500 MB, 2.5 GB and 5 GB of data, respectively.

"Prepaid is a critical part of Sprint's portfolio and is a key part of the business where we can lead with aggressive pricing plans," Sprint spokeswoman Danielle Babbington told FierceWireless.

Sprint's double data strategy for Boost is similar to the track it is taking with its new family plans, which also offer double the data allotments compared to what Verizon Wireless (NYSE: VZ) and AT&T Mobility (NYSE: T) offer.

Sprint isn't the only carrier focusing efforts on prepaid. Verizon's new prepaid AllSet plans, which now include LTE, start at $45 per month for unlimited voice, texting and 500 MB of data. Separately, AT&T's Cricket brand has plans starting at $40 per month for unlimited voice, texting and 500 MB of data before throttling. AT&T's GoPhone brand offers unlimited voice, texting and 500 MB of data for $40 per month.

Meanwhile, T-Mobile US (NYSE:TMUS) is quadrupling the amount of data customers on its low-cost "Simple Starter" plans can get per month to 2 GB for $45, just $5 more than the existing plan, which offers 500 MB of data. Both plans offer unlimited voice and texting.
