Symbian Q2 mobile shipments up 52%

Thanks to Nokia's strong sales in multimedia devices, Symbian reported that Q2 shipments of its OS increased 52 percent. Symbian is 47.9 percent owned by Nokia. Symbian reported that 18.7 million handsets shipped with its OS during the quarter, which brings the total to 145 million devices shipped with its OS since 1998.

Symbian's revenue, in turn, increased 7 percent during its Q2, helped by strong demands for smartphones in Japan. Symbian's average royalty rates per unit dropped to $4.30 from $5.70 from the previous year.
