AT&T launches prepaid mobile broadband offerings

Tools

AT&T Mobility launched its own prepaid mobile broadband plans, weeks after rival Verizon Wireless decided to jump into the prepaid broadband market.

The new plans, called DataConnect Pass, work with all AT&T-certified netbooks and laptops. The pricing is identical to the plans that Verizon introduced earlier this month. AT&T is offering a daily plan for $15 with a cap at 75 MB of usage, a weekly plan for $30 with a cap at 250 MB, and a monthly plan for $50 with a 500 MB cap. AT&T said that users will receive a text and email message once either 30 minutes or 20 percent of their allotted data usage remains in a session.

The move by the nation's two largest carriers into prepaid mobile broadband marks a shift in the mobile broadband landscape. Previously, prepaid mobile broadband was the exclusive province of carriers such as Leap Wireless, and, more recently, Virgin Mobile USA. Leap offers unlimited usage for $40 per month and and Virgin Mobile offers 1 GB of data usage for $60.

I'm really loving seeing all of the new entrants to prepaid broadband this year. It really is a great product, although I don't believe that the pricing is quite yet where it needs to be. Also, a true pay as you go option is lacking, and I believe there is a real underlying demand for it, particularly as people get used to whether or not they want this service and how much data they will ultimately use.

I'll take Sprint's broadband any day over either Verizon or AT&T. Besides being cheaper, it's better.

CricKet is a better deal about 35 per month with a 5 Gig cap that starts from scrach every month. My friend had it and it works great

All the major wireless providers offer 5gb of data for $60 so the comment above that Sprint is cheaper is wrong. The taxes that AT&T charges is more than Verizon or Sprint but the price and usage limit is the same. My data card with Verizon is $60.07 with tax, the same on AT&T is $72.99 a month. http://mobilewiseguy.com
