AT&T lists 3G iPhone upgrade guidelines

AT&T has laid out a criteria list when it comes to existing iPhone customers upgrading to the 3G version, which will become available on July 11. AT&T, which is the exclusive carrier of the device in the U.S., said customers using today's iPhones are automatically eligible for an upgrade to the 3G version at the subsidized price of $200 for the 8GB model and $300 for the 16GB version, according to InformationWeek. However, customers must sign a new two-year contract.

Customers who purchased an iPhone on or after May 27 can take advantage of an upgrade without any extra charges and even get a refund on the difference between the price of the old iPhone and the subsidized 3G iPhone.

This time around, AT&T is requiring that buyers of the new iPhone purchase a minimum $30-per-month data plan compared with $20 for the 2G iPhone version. Consumer electronics retailer Best Buy has posted a general list of criteria for AT&T cell phone upgrades.
