T-Mobile discontinuing @Home calling service

T-Mobile USA will be dropping active support for its @Home landline replacement service, which it had offered for $10 per month, a company spokeswoman confirmed to FierceWireless.

"The needs of our customers are constantly changing, and T-Mobile must foresee and adapt to these changes," T-Mobile said in a statement. "As such, T-Mobile plans to soon discontinue selling the T-Mobile@Home service; however, we will continue to support the service for customers who are @Home subscribers.  No changes are anticipated in pricing of the service, nor will this decision impact the Wi-Fi calling (Unlimited HotSpot Calling) service."

It is unclear why exactly the carrier decided to drop the service, which it has offered since July 2008. The service allowed T-Mobile customers to buy a router complete with a GSM SIM chip, plug the box into an existing broadband connection and then plug in any landline phone to begin making calls using their existing landline number.

The carrier has made WiFi calling one of the centerpieces of its services offering. Last year, T-Mobile debuted a new unlimited voice-over-WiFi calling service plan for the enterprise segment for $10 per month. The operator first introduced unlimited WiFi calling for consumers with the launch of its Hotspot@Home service in 2007.
