T-Mobile's family plans now support up to 10 lines

T-Mobile US (NYSE:TMUS) changed its family plans over the weekend to add support for up to 10 lines. The carrier initially launched its family plan in July with four lines of service for $100 per month.

Under T-Mobile's expanded family plan offer, the first line costs $50 per month, the second line costs $30, lines 3-6 cost $10 each and lines 7-10 cost $20 each. That pricing structure is somewhat similar to Sprint's (NYSE: S) Framily plans, which lower the cost per line as more customers are added to the Framily circle.

Each member of T-Mobile's family calling plan gets unlimited voice, texting and 2.5 GB of LTE data before throttling through the end of 2015. After that, the data allotments per line will drop down to 1 GB per line before throttling. Further, the offer for that pricing is only valid if customers sign up before Sept. 30.

T-Mobile's pricing does not include the cost of a device.

Although it's generally less expensive, T-Mobile's new family plan pricing is not directly comparable to what other carriers offer due to the differences in the structure of T-Mobile's service. For example, the T-Mobile plan offers a total of 15 GB of data across six lines, but the data is not shareable.

AT&T Mobility (NYSE: T) offers 15 GB of shareable data for six lines under its Mobile Share Value plans for $130 per month. However, six customers' smartphone access charges--if they signed up through AT&T's Next handset upgrade plan or brought their own device--would add $90 to the cost, bringing it up to $220. Customers would then also have to pay off the cost of their phones in monthly installments.

Verizon Wireless' (NYSE: VZ) More Everything plan for 14 GB of shareable data with unlimited voice and text costs $120 (the 16 GB plan costs $10 more). Then, if six customers added smartphones and signed up via Verizon's Edge handset upgrade program, that would add $90 to the cost per month, bringing the total cost under the 14 GB plan to $210 (and $220 for the 16 GB plan). Customers would then also have to pay off the cost of their phones in monthly installments.

Under Sprint's Framily plan, six customers could sign up and get unlimited voice, texting and 1 GB of data per month for a total cost of $180 per month. Customers can get 3 GB of data for an additional $10 per line.
