Rumor Mill: T-Mobile pre-sells 1.5 million G1 phones

Tools

T-Mobile USA has pre-sold around 1.5 million G1 phones, the HTC-manufactured handset that will run Google's Android operating system, according to various reports.

Last week, FierceWireless reported that T-Mobile USA had tripled the number of units available for pre-order and had sold out of them all.  No precise number was given then, but the news website Pulse2.com has reported that the total number of units involved in the pre-order shipments stands at 1.5 million. A T-Mobile spokeswoman could not be reached for comment.

The phone will launch in the United States on Oct. 22, in the U.K. sometime in November and across European markets in the first quarter of 2009.

Moronic. Where are you people getting 1.5M G1s pre-ordered? Engadget reports that the initial T-Mo order was 60k. Now, the rumor is that the initial order has been tripled. That comes out to 180k, nothing like 1.5M. HTC itself said that it was expecting to produce only 500k of these phones this year, and that's why this site itself reported. So, where is this 1.5M coming from? People who can't do math?

Most of the 1.3 million subs will come from Sprint as Sprint continues to hemorage customers.
