T-Mobile hints at April 21 launch event

T-Mobile USA will hold a launch event in New York April 21, and speculation has been building that the carrier will launch a new phone based on Google's Android platform.

T-Mobile sent out an email late last week to several media outlets (including FierceWireless) urging them to "save the date" for the event.

Although the announcement didn't give any hint as to what would be happening, recent clues point to Android action. The HTC Magic, the manufacturer's second Android phone, recently passed through the FCC with T-Mobile branding. (Vodafone announced at Mobile World Congress earlier this year it would sell the device in Europe.) Further, T-Mobile held a similar launch event in New York in September to launch the G1.

T-Mobile in the U.S. was the first in the world to introduce a gadget running Google's mobile phone operating system, though Sprint Nextel has indicated it also plans to release such a device.
