T-Mobile wants to turn MyFaves into social network

Tools

T-Mobile USA wants to turn its MyFaves calling feature into a social networking experience for subscribers, a possible effort to expand a service that currently allows customers unlimited calling to five numbers.

"I want it to be more than just voice," T-Mobile CTO Cole Brodman told the blog GigaOM. "I want it to be a lens to our social networks."

According to Brodman, the company will give the feature a social networking makeover and will begin pushing it aggressively next year. He did not offer any specific details about what that would exactly entail, or if the newly revamped service would give subscribers easier access to social networking websites such as Facebook and Twitter.

T-Mobile is not the only carrier with a MyFaves-type service; Verizon Wireless jumped on the bandwagon recently with its "Friends and Family" promotion following its acquisition of Alltel (which offered a similar service dubbed My Circle). However, T-Mobile's plans to add social networking into the mix is new, and GigaOM hinted that it may stand as an effort by the carrier to drive up data revenues.

MyFaves does not include texting. Currently, it only allows customers to make unlimited calling to five numbers.

Whoops! Thanks for the catch. The story has been corrected. --Mike Dano, managing editor.
