AT&T acquires Wayport, boosts WiFi presence

Tools

AT&T will acquire the WiFi service provider Wayport for around $275 million in cash, greatly expanding its WiFi footprint into the hotels, airports and other areas where Wayport currently provides services.

The move boosts the number of AT&T WiFi hotspots in the United States to close to 20,000, and AT&T customers will get access to the hotspots Wayport operates at many hotels, including ones in Wyndham, Marriott Vacation Club and Four Seasons hotels, HealthSouth and Sun Healthcare locations and McDonald's restaurants.

This past week, AT&T allowed its iPhone users to get free WiFi access to all of its hotspots in the country.
