AT&T unveils $3 per day unlimited GoPhone calling plan

Tools

AT&T Mobility is launching a new calling plan through its prepaid GoPhone service, which will give users unlimited calling with no roaming or long distance fees for $3 per day. The service will start May 11.

AT&T said customers using this new plan will also be able to get text messaging and data service at the same pay-per-use rates as all other GoPhone "Pay As You Go" plans. Additionally, customers can add messaging or data packages. The carrier also offers an unlimited mobile-to-mobile plan for subscribers who primarily call other AT&T customers for $1 per day, with charges of 10 cents per call for calls outside the AT&T network.

"We have created this offer to meet the needs of prepaid subscribers and to round out our portfolio of GoPhone prepaid offers," said an AT&T spokeswoman.

The move is the latest by Tier 1 carriers in response to the rising popularity of unlimited prepaid wireless plans. Boost Mobile's $50 per month plan for unlimited voice, data and texting helped Sprint Nextel gain 764,000 net prepaid iDEN subscribers in the first quarter.

AT&T's $3 Unlimited per Day GoPhone is just a selling tactic for $20 unlimited texting. The initiative's title is appropriate - "GoPhone" means go to Leap, PCS, Boost, T-Mobile or even AT&T's rechargeable prepaid reseller of TracFone. The recent CDC report showed that wireless-only includes the low-income demographic. AT&T's VP of Prepaid visualizes a phantom customer that is non-contract but still high ARPU.

Does AT&T really believe that they can sell $3 per day prepaid when KFC had record lines for free roasted chicken from downloaded coupons promoted by Oprah? And does AT&T realize that $3 per day triggers comparison shopping. Radio Shack has AT&T. If a customer asks about AT&T's $3 per day offer, the Radio Shack employee could suggest better non-contract deals from Boost and Virgin. Will AT&T advertise only $3 per day on TV during the NBA finals? Sprint with the Palm Pre at Best Buy could be the flagrant foul of the NBA finals in June.

This plan from AT&T is not really all that useful or economical. I don't want to pay $3 for every day if I only want to call my kids maybe 5 or 6 times a week on different days. Or worse, pay $3 on a day I received a single call?! That would very quickly become VERY expensive. I think I'll stick to my NET10 prepaid phone which is always 10c a minute even while roaming, anytime, with no daily charges at all.

I agree with James, Who in their right mind would go for $3 per day - add it up, that's $90+ per month without everything being covered. I only pay around $15 per month for my Tracfone and I can make and receive calls anytime without worrying about some $3 charge. I also don't have to pay a $1 daily fee like some of the carriers charge and I can make long distance and international calls for the same price as a local call. I think you would be a fool if anyone goes for this offer.

Actually, for those who don't use their phone much, this is not a bad deal. If you talk on your phone once a week, but the conversation last about an hour or so, you're just paying $3.00. I can talk only a short time with net10, who I really love, but the minutes do run out quickly. I've made 3 calls with net10 and already I'm down to $5.00 on a $15 card that I purchased a week ago. (Long-winded friends/family) It all depends on how you use your phone. If you place $100.00 on your cell, it would more than likely last up to a year.

What about ATT charging for incoming calls even when no message is left on my inbox? This racks up a $1 per day charge on my Go-Phone, plus the minutes involved. I had someone calling the wrong number call me every day for 2 weeks and drained my Go-Phone account. I have no way of blocking wrong number incoming calls that cause me to get charged and drain my Go-Phone balance. I wonder why nobody else has complained about that here? That sort of situation will cause a person to pay more for a pre-paid phone monthly than a regular plan with free night and weekend minutes, which the Go-Phone doesn't offer. I have to pay $0.10/min all the time, whether day or night.
