TD-SCDMA reaches 384 kbps

If TD-SCDMA were being developed in any free-market society, it would be dead by now. But the Chinese government keeps plugging along with its own home-grown standard, and it looks like it will will force China's large mobile operator, China Mobile, to deploy it. Because if anyone can pull it off, it would be China's strongest operator. And lucky for China Mobile, the TD-SCDMA standard finally is transmitting data at rates of 384 kbps. Nevermind the fact that W-CDMA/HSDPA and CDMA2000 1x EV-DO can transmit data exceeding 2 Mbps. As we reported earlier this year, China's operators were surprisingly open about their opposition to TD-SCDMA.
