The rise of the smart phone
Virtually every device maker aimed to introduce that sweet spot smart phone: The one that appeals to more than just the on-the-go corporate executive. Hence, we saw the introduction of super-thin devices such as the Motorola Q, RIM's BlackBerry Pearl, Samsung's BlackJack and the Cingular 8525 PDA at some pretty attractive price points. Cingular has had a slew of introductions of small, low-cost smart phones stretching back to September, including the 3125 and Nokia E62--announced in September--and the BlackJack, the 8525 and the Treo 680. There was a perfect storm of elements that made the popularity of "prosumer" smart phones happen: People are crazy about being connected to their email, the devices are slim, cool looking and affordable, and carriers offered a suitable high-speed data experience.
