TI's balancing act in move from baseband chips

Texas Instruments' decision to shift away from baseband chip technology represents a difficult balancing act for the company. TI must try to make do without the cash of the baseband business--which made up around 20 percent of its overall 2008 revenue--while avoiding a precipitous drop in its stock price. The chip maker hopes to make up for the loss by focusing on chips for other applications such as smartphones. However, analysts believe the move may signal trouble on the horizon.
