Time Warner launching mobile WiMAX service this fall

Time Warner Cable will launch mobile WiMAX service beginning this fall in Dallas and Charlotte, N.C. The MSO will resell the service through Clearwire and also will launch it in two other markets, though the company declined to name the other two markets.

"You will hear a lot more about this as we build up to the launch this fall," Time Warner CEO Glenn Britt said on the company's earnings conference call. Britt did not disclose any product offerings or pricing options, but indicated the service will be bundled with the carrier's current broadband offerings. "We see wireless as complementing wireline," he said.

Time Warner joins fellow cable company Comcast as a reseller of Clearwire's mobile WiMAX service. Both were among a group of investors--which included Intel, Google and Bright House Networks--that contributed $3.2 billion to Clearwire last year. Comcast has started marketing its mobile WiMAX offering, called High-Speed 2go, in Portland, Ore., and Atlanta. Comcast's service is available on promotion for $49.99 per month for a year, a price that includes Comcast's Internet home service and a WiFi router.
