Top nine predictions for 2009

As is tradition here at FierceWireless it's time to present our wireless predictions for 2009. Before we begin, however, I'd like to caution you that these predictions are what we think will happen in the coming year. We are not privy to any actual deals or inside information.  We base our predictions on careful analysis of the news cycle and our collective years of wireless industry knowledge.

With the current economic climate, it is no surprise we predict some dire consequences for troubled firms such as Motorola and Palm. We also think that competition will become even more fierce and that will force changes in price plans.

Fierce actually has a decent track record with our previous predictions. Some of our winning predictions in 2008 were that Helio would go bust (OK it didn't go bust but it was acquired by Virgin Mobile USA) and that Sprint and Clearwire would merge their WiMAX networks (that prediction came true in May 2008 when Sprint and Clearwire merged their WiMAX networks forming the "new" Clearwire).

Please share with us your own 2009 wireless industry predictions, just add them to the comments below. Check out all of our predictions here. --Sue

Superb analysis, especially the MOT financials and strategy. Think I'll renew me Mad Magazine subscription.

Nose Tra Dam Us, what do you see for wireless in 2009?

1. There are 360 more wireless days in 2009

2. Chew upon this: 700 MHz D band mischief is afoot.

3. The evil that men do live long after their cell phone conversations.

4. I’d rather be a villager than a Motorola Devices manager.

5. Wireless CEOs and board directors master their riches, while shareholders, employees, and communities pray to the stars for transparency, jobs, bread, and clothing.

6. A Storm has brewed.

7. At the end of the year, the correct spelling for WiMax 16e will be LTE. Ask Mr. Chips if you don’t believe me.

8. Few will dance the Palm bossa nova.

9. Your cell phone tax money will be unwisely spent by congressional leaders.

10. People will stop watching the History Channel until it starts showing more history and wireless stuff.

11. Remember, the lady who said, “let them cake” does not suffer from headaches…and not because she spent too much time talking on cell phone.

Best Wishes for 2009,
Nose Tra Dam Us

Thanks for your continued hard work with Fierce Wireless! I have run a few what-ifs for 2009 that might be an interesting complement to the prediction mania these days. Try to go a bit off the charts rather than extrapolate from current state. Have a look at mobiletribe (dot) com.

My prediction is Sprint will continue to bleed customers and their executives will continue to get big bonuses for sending more and more jobs overseas to cheap labor markets.
