Toshiba unveils new smartphone running on Snapdragon

Toshiba announced ahead of Mobile World Congress that it was launching a new smartphone, the first running on Qualcomm's Snapdragon chipset, becoming yet another company not traditionally associated with handsets to make a foray into the space.

The company, best known for making televisions, launched the phone, called the TG01. The phone is running on a 1GHz Snapdragon processor and will have a custom Toshiba user interface overlaid onto Windows Mobile 6.1, and will feature full DivX and Flash compatibility. The phone, which measures only 9.9-mm thick, will also feature a 4.1-inch WVGA  touchscreen display, HSDPA data, GPS, WiFi, a microSD slot capable of holding 512MB. There is no pricing or launch date information. 

Qualcomm had announced last November that a number of handsets, running on both Windows Mobile and Google's Android platform, would launch in 2009 with the company's new Snapdragon chipset. Toshiba becomes the latest company to try to angle its way into the smartphone market. Huawei and Acer will launch smartphones at Mobile World Congress, and Dell is rumored to be launching a smartphone soon as well.
