Trend: Microsoft, AOL announce VoIP services

Microsoft, AOL, and Motorola each plan to launch VoIP services in the coming months. AOL's TotalTalk service launches October 4th. The company expects subscribers to TotalTalk to save up to 40 percent on phone bills. Microsoft is teaming up with Qwest Communications for its VoIP offering aimed at small and medium-sized businesses. Microsoft bought VoIP developer Teleo last month and expects to launch its new VoIP service in early 2006. Motorola is providing its broadband infrastructure to VoIP service provider Sonus, a move that demonstrates one path for convergence of the technology into major carriers' portfolios.
