UIQ files for bankruptcy

UIQ, the software development platform owned by Motorola and Sony Ericsson has filed for bankruptcy in a District Court in Sweden. 

UIQ was one of the three Symbian-based user interfaces, and was originally part of Symbian. It was bought by Sony Ericsson in 2006, and half of it was then sold to Motorola in October 2007. However, its future as a software platform turned bleak when Nokia purchased Symbian, formed the Symbian Foundation and said it would begin producing a royalty-free Symbian platform.

Sony Ericsson said in November that it would continue to pay UIQ's employees while it considered its options for the future of the development firm. Evidently, the handset maker decided there was not much reason to continue supporting UIQ. UIQ has around 200 employees.
